In Search of Knowledge at HERMES SoftLab this Summer

Ljubljana, 11 July 2007 – July will see the HERMES SoftLab Group host eight summer schools in computing at six different locations in Slovenia and abroad. Students of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science faculties will team up in project groups to enhance their skills with work on various IT projects.

This year’s HERMES SoftLab summer schools include a record number of locations and participants, which this time around exceed the 100 mark, and they are set to test their wits in projects reaching into the fields of embedded systems, web portal design, e-banking, java programming, data storage and distribution. This is the first time when there will also be a module for students of the Faculty of Economics aimed at business analysis skills and understanding business processes, which are in practice a basis for sound technical solutions.

HERMES SoftLab’s summer schools extend back to 1996, when Ljubljana hosted the first such school with ten participants. With each year we strengthened our cooperation with the Faculty for Electrical Engineering, Computer and Information Science, and the summer school also began to take shape in Maribor. With the expansion of HERMES SoftLab into countries of the Adriatic region and the school’s success in Slovenia, the only reasonable step seemed to be to transfer the good practice there as well. In addition to Ljubljana, Maribor and Nova Gorica, the programme now also includes Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Kragujevac.

Recognition and an increasing number of applications is proof of the fact that we are working in the right direction, as based on the application forms, most of the students applies based on recommendations from friends and fellow students. The beat of the realistic development environment and the power of teamwork, where the path to the solution is more emphasises than the solution itself, is the main reason behind the success of the summer schools.«

Additional to organization of summer school HERMES SoftLab is sponsoring and co-organizing many other events that promote the IT area, such as University programming marathon, technical student’s excursions abroad, Computer festival.
